Inauguration of Two State-of-the-Art Landfills Valued at Over US$10 Million Boosts Environmental Sustainability in Kep and Kampot

Amidst a commitment to environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has proudly unveiled two cutting-edge landfills, with a combined value exceeding US$10 million, in the provinces of Kep and Kampot.

Under the distinguished presidency of HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport, the official inauguration ceremony took place on 30th May 2023, marking a significant step towards enhanced waste management practices in the region.

The first landfill, spanning an expansive 8-hectare site in the heart of Sangkat Prey Thom, Kep City, Kep Province, materialized in May 2020. With an investment of US$7.1 million, this project forms an integral component of the broader US$30 million initiative, namely the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Tourism Sector for Sustainable Growth in the Greater Mekong Subregion’s second phase. Simultaneously, the second landfill sprawls across a vast area of 10,338 hectares, nestled in the idyllic Thmey village, Thmey commune, Teuk Chhou district of Kampot province. Boasting a construction budget of US$3,372,514, this project commenced on 20th May 2021 and concluded on 30th September 2022. It is also a testament to the remarkable collaboration between the Cambodian government and the ADB through the Greater Mekong Subregion Corridor Phase II Development Project.

Emphasizing their adherence to meticulous technical standards, both landfills possess a remarkable capacity to cater to the region’s waste disposal needs for up to two decades.

The inauguration of these two state-of-the-art landfills signifies the nation’s resolute dedication to fostering a sustainable environment and reinforcing waste management practices. Cambodia takes a momentous stride towards a cleaner, greener future, ensuring the preservation of its natural beauty and the well-being of its communities.
