Where Water Flows, Equality Grows: Digital Engineering Drives Gender Equity on World Water Day

Bentley Systems is advocating for a shift that moves women from being seen merely as water users to being centered as the engineers, scientists, and decision-makers of sustainable infrastructure.

Bentley’s move is for the 2026 World Water Day campaign called “Where water flows, equality grows”, which highlights the profound connection between safe water access and fundamental human rights.

Modern water distribution requires sophisticated planning that balances energy use, cost, and long-term reliability. Bentley’s OpenFlows Water software has become a cornerstone for this mission, allowing engineers to model complex networks and implement digital workflows that reach communities faster.

These technical advancements are particularly transformative for women, as bringing water directly into the home reclaims time for education and economic agency.

India serves as a primary example of this digital transformation in action. In the Godda district, an integrated hydraulic solution successfully mapped a multivillage supply network across difficult terrain, serving over 560,000 people while saving 10 million rupees in costs.

Similarly, in Uttar Pradesh, the Ayodhya Authority utilized digital twin technology to provide 24-hour pressurized water access, a move that reduced water loss by 35% and eliminated 347 tons of carbon emissions annually.

The scale of these projects continues to expand across the subcontinent. In Rajghat, engineering for a system serving 2.5 million people was completed in just four months—a fraction of the traditional timeline.

Larger regional efforts, such as the initiative in Karnataka, have utilized GIS and IoT technology to provide three million tap connections to 15 million residents. By streamlining design times in places like Belapur and Singrauli by up to 95%, digital modeling is proving that technology is the fastest route to universal water connectivity and, by extension, a more equitable society.
