New flood prevention and drainage improvement projects ready for the rainy season

Three flood prevention and drainage improvement projects in three areas including Wat Phnom and Toul Kork drainage projects and a riverside water storage project are in process to prepare for the upcoming rainy season.

On April 17, 2020, H.E. Mr MIKAMI Masahiro, Japanese Ambassador in Cambodia, released a short video on the Japanese Embassy in Cambodia’s official Facebook page about the process of Flood Prevention and Drainage Improvement Projects in Phnom Penh and the reason why there were traffic blockages in these three areas during the day.

“The Flood Prevention Projects in Wat Phnom and Touk Kork are ongoing towards completion in 2021. For instance, at the Wat Phnom construction site, the project of digging a seven-metre deep tunnel to install pipes underground is proceeding,” he said.

“On the riverside, the other 6,500-ton underground water storage facility is under construction. In the rainy season, rainwater will flow from the streets through the pipes to the water storage and then it will be released to the river. While some streets around the construction sites are being blocked, I would like to request your continuous understanding and support to the project,” he added.

The project was broken ground on the 4 March 2019 under the presidency of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen. It is the fourth implementation phase of the US$36 million development program funded by the Japanese Government.

The project includes the construction of underground water storage, a water pumping station, a mechanical waste bin, and water pumping trucks.

Also in March, Cambodia received US$310 million in development aid for five major projects in an Exchange of Notes with Japan’s official development assistance, which was presided over by Cambodia Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen. (Read more)
