Bassac River’s Seventh Bridge Crosses 85% Completion Mark Ahead of Schedule

Construction on the seventh bridge spanning the Bassac River, connecting Chak Angre Krom and Prek Pra in southern Phnom Penh, reached 85% completion as of early September 2026. The progress milestone was confirmed during an on-site project inspection led by H.E. Soung Heng, Secretary of State and Project Director at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, on September 8, 2026. Since breaking ground on February 19, 2024, the strategic infrastructure development has progressed smoothly, tracking 3.22% ahead of its master schedule.

A comprehensive technical evaluation indicates that the bridge’s foundation, lower substructure, and connecting upper bridge structures are all 100 % complete. At the same time, construction of the main bridge superstructure has reached 84.6 % completion. Surrounding road network integration stands at 51 % overall, with both the 804.30-meter connecting road and the 1,541-meter access ramps passing the 50 % mark.

During the inspection, project managers commended contractor Shanghai Construction Group for upholding technical standards, contractual commitments, and structural aesthetics. Due to rising water levels during the peak monsoon season, the Ministry instructed the contractor to step up site safety protocols and install extra water safety buoys and cushions to protect river traffic throughout the remaining construction phase. Engineering teams estimate that the final bridge sections will connect across the Bassac River by late 2026, with full project completion anticipated by mid-2027.

Designed to alleviate chronic traffic congestion across the capital’s southern corridors, the four-lane crossing serves as a key urban transport link. It represents the fourth major river bridge following the Koh Norea, Preah Monivong, and Koh Anlong Chen bridges connecting to Xi Jinping Boulevard. Once fully operational, the new route will streamline travel between Meanchey and Chbar Ampov districts, enhance trade movement, and improve urban mobility for Phnom Penh commuters. (read more)
