Bavet City Inaugurates Modern Landfill with 420,000 Cubic Meter Capacity to Enhance Urban Sanitation

Minister of Public Works Peng Ponea leads the official opening of the 20-hectare facility designed to serve five local districts for the next twenty years

The Royal Government of Cambodia has officially commissioned a major landfill facility in Bavet City, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to modernize urban waste management and environmental protection. The sub-project, developed under the comprehensive Livable Cities Development Project, was inaugurated on March 23, 2026, during a ceremony presided over by His Excellency Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, alongside various high-ranking officials and development partners.

Spanning across 20.7 hectares of land, the construction of this critical infrastructure commenced in February 2025 and reached completion in March 2026. The facility is strategically planned to remain operational for a 20-year lifespan, providing essential solid waste management services to residents across five key administrative areas, including the Sangkats of Bavet, Prey Angkunh, Prasat, Bati, and Chrak Mtes.

Architecturally, the landfill is designed to feature five pits across four developmental phases. The current first phase saw the completion of two pits boasting a combined storage capacity of 423,058 cubic meters. Beyond waste storage, the site is equipped with a sophisticated wastewater treatment system, an administrative center, a specialized weight scale building, and other supporting infrastructure necessary for modern sanitary operations.

During the ceremony, Minister Peng Ponea emphasized that the completion of this landfill represents a vital step forward in Cambodia’s urban development strategy. He noted that the facility is not merely a waste site but a foundational pillar for improving public health and preserving the local environment. By establishing such high-standard infrastructure, the government aims to transform Bavet into a clean, sustainable, and highly livable city that is increasingly attractive to both international tourists and long-term investors.
