Permanent Secretary of State Dr. Ty Norin presides over handover of specialized detection instruments and diagnostic medical equipment in Pursat province

Pursat: Advancing the peaceful application of civilian nuclear technology remains a major strategic target for Cambodia as it works to modernize public healthcare and build robust national radiation safety frameworks aligned with international standards. According to handing over on July 2026, Permanent Secretary of State Dr. Ty Norin, representing Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rattanak, presided over an official handover ceremony in Pursat province for medical diagnostic devices and radiation detection equipment supplied under technical cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

During the ceremony, the Ministry of Mines and Energy officially allocated the specialized equipment across three key state entities to bolster monitoring and diagnostic capacity. A total of nine radiation detection kits were handed over directly to the Ministry of Mines and Energy to enhance routine monitoring and safety oversight at sites utilizing radioactive sources across the Kingdom. Concurrently, four radiation detection units were assigned to the Secretariat of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee to reinforce field detection capabilities, safeguard major national and international gatherings, and elevate readiness for potential radiological incidents.

Alongside national security enhancements, the technical framework delivered direct public health benefits to local communities. Four mobile medical diagnostic systems, comprising two portable X-ray units and two ultrasound machines, were presented to the Pursat Provincial Administration. These advanced imaging tools are designated for regional medical facilities to improve diagnostic accuracy and expand healthcare access for rural residents.

Noticeably, the joint initiative between the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the IAEA underscores Cambodia’s strategic focus on harnessing peaceful nuclear applications for sustainable socio-economic development. Deploying radiation detection tools alongside modern medical imaging machinery reinforces the nation’s nuclear safety oversight while simultaneously upgrading local healthcare delivery in provincial communities.
