Cambodia and Japan Forge Strategic Alliance to Elevate Bilateral Investment and Industrial Growth

The Council for the Development of Cambodia and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry have formalized a landmark agreement to significantly enhance bilateral investment cooperation between the two nations. This development was highlighted during a high-level bilateral discussion between HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, and HE Komori Takuo, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, held on June 9, 2026, in Tokyo. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to deepening economic engagement and setting robust frameworks for future cross-border commercial activities.

During the Tokyo assembly, officials disclosed that the two entities had previously signed a foundational Memorandum of Cooperation on Investment Cooperation on May 29. This foundational pact outlines three primary strategic objectives designed to reshape economic relations. These pillars encompass the active acceleration of investment promotion activities, the comprehensive facilitation of administrative investment procedures, and the formal creation of a dedicated Business Co-creation Team. The newly formed team is expected to serve as a critical bridge for private-sector cooperation, joint ventures, and technological exchange between Japanese and Cambodian enterprises.

Both delegations reaffirmed their intentions to reinforce existing trade mechanisms and expand mutual collaboration by leveraging the newly established Business Co-creation Team framework. By prioritizing targeted industrial development alongside trade growth, Cambodia and Japan aim to push their bilateral economic ties to a more advanced level, matching the evolving demands of regional supply chains. This high-level engagement serves as a testament to Cambodia’s robust government-to-government economic diplomacy, which seeks to secure sustainable, high-quality foreign direct investment to foster long-term national economic resilience.
