Cambodia to Propose Seven Major Sites for World Heritage Status

Cambodia is set to propose seven major sites for inclusion on the World Heritage List, as announced by Dr Chhum Meng Hong, Acting Secretary General of the National Commission for UNESCO Cambodia, and Acting Chairman of the World Heritage Committee of Cambodia recently.

The sites include Tuol Sleng Museum, Phnom Da, Angkor Borei, Banteay Chhmar, Phnom Oudong, Phnom Kulen, Preah Khan, Kampong Svay, and Beng Mealea temples, which have been listed since 1993 and are due for revision in 2020.

During a press conference held by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to present the results of the 46th meeting of the World Heritage Committee in India, Dr Chhum Meng Hong emphasised Cambodia’s readiness to submit the documentation for Banteay Chhmar by the end of 2024, aiming for submission in 2025. The ministry is also establishing a working group to evaluate Phnom Da and Angkor Borei.

In addition to these sites, Cambodia plans to evaluate the inclusion of Tuol Sleng Museum, Boeung Choeung Ek Station, and M13 as World Heritage Sites in 2025.

Cambodia currently boasts 10 cultural properties on the World Heritage List, including four tangible heritage sites: Angkor Archaeological Park, Preah Vihear Temple, Sambor Prei Kuk, and Koh Ker temples, along with six intangible heritage sites such as the Royal Ballet and Bokator or Kun Khmer.
