Driven by the Environmental Circular Strategy 2023–2028, the Kingdom outpaces regional peers to establish protected green leisure destinations and foster sustainable community livelihoods

Cambodia has secured the top spot in Southeast Asia for eco-tourism while placing 17th globally in the international destination rankings compiled by U.S. News & World Report. The landmark achievement highlights the Kingdom’s growing reputation as a premier regional hub for sustainable travel, underpinned by national peace, political stability, and targeted environmental stewardship under the leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet.

The global recognition reflects the successful execution of the Royal Government’s Circular Strategy on Environment 2023–2028, which focuses on three guiding principles: clean, green, and sustainable. To capitalize on this strategic direction, government authorities are systematically expanding green leisure destinations within protected areas across the country. These initiatives are designed to generate green jobs for local populations, elevate rural community livelihoods, and ensure the long-term preservation of natural resources.

Cambodia’s 17th global standing places it at the forefront of Southeast Asian eco-tourism, comfortably leading all regional counterparts in the U.S. News & World Report dataset. Within the regional index, Laos ranked second behind Cambodia at 22nd globally, followed by Thailand at 33rd, Malaysia at 42nd, the Philippines at 60th, Indonesia at 67th, Myanmar at 74th, Singapore at 77th, and Vietnam at 89th. The standing underscores Cambodia’s vast ecological potential, driven by pristine natural assets such as extensive tropical forests, mountain ranges, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes that appeal to eco-conscious international visitors.
