Cambodian Ministries Sign Historic Pact to Launch Major Ecotourism Networks

In a significant move to expand Cambodia’s sustainable tourism sector, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries have officially partnered to establish two new ecotourism networks across the country. The collaboration was formalized on November 24 through the signing of four Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), underscoring a strategic focus on integrating conservation with economic development.

The signing ceremony was conducted between His Excellency Hout Hak, Minister of Tourism and Chairman of the National Committee for the Management and Development of Tourism and Ecotourism Communities, and His Excellency Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Vice-Chairman of the National Committee.

The four agreements are designed to provide a comprehensive framework for the new initiative. Specifically, the ministries committed to an MOU on promoting the development of the Tonle Sap Ecotourism Network for 2026, and a separate MOU focusing on the Reforestation and Fisheries Ecotourism Network in the Coastal Region and Islands for 2026. These two networks represent the core geographical areas of the new ecotourism drive.

In addition to the geographic focus, the remaining two MOUs aim to strengthen the overall operational framework. They include an agreement on strengthening the management and development of tourism and ecotourism communities, and an agreement on collaboration to promote ecotourism at all levels. The cooperation between the two key ministries is expected to leverage their respective expertise to ensure that tourism growth is balanced with environmental preservation and community benefit.

Recently, through the Ministry of Rural Development, the construction site of three new roads was opened, which will help promote natural tourism in Teuk Phos district, Kampong Chhnang province. (Read more)
