CHN ENERGY Plans US$1bn Investment in Renewable Energy Projects in Cambodia

China’s leading energy company, CHN ENERGY, has unveiled plans to invest a staggering US$1 billion in the development of renewable energy projects in Cambodia. The announcement came following a productive meeting between HE Suon Sophal, Deputy Secretary General of Cambodia’s Investment Committee, and Mr. I Seang, a representative of CHN ENERGY Enterprise, on 8 April 2024.

During the meeting, representatives from the Chinese enterprise expressed their keen interest in investing in renewable energy ventures, with a focus on hydropower and solar projects within Cambodia. Highlighting Cambodia’s strategic positioning and abundant ecological resources, the delegation underscored the country’s potential as an ideal destination for expanding their business operations.

In response to CHN ENERGY’s ambitious proposal, HE Suon Sophal warmly welcomed the significant investment initiative. He emphasised the importance of continued collaboration with relevant ministries and institutions to ensure the seamless integration of these projects into Cambodia’s broader master plan for power sector development spanning from 2022 to 2040.

This substantial investment aligns with global efforts to combat climate change, as evidenced by the recent World Summit on Climate Change (COP28) held in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, at the close of 2023. With over 100 countries pledging to ramp up renewable energy production, CHN ENERGY’s commitment to investing in Cambodia’s renewable energy sector signals a significant step towards achieving sustainable energy goals on a global scale.
