Has-architecture wins design competition with 485m MGN tower in Phnom Penh

Architectural firm Has-architecture has won a design competition for the 485m high MGN tower along Norodom Boulevard in Phnom Penh.

The MGN tower will be the local headquarters of MGN Bank, an office and a hotel and is set to be the second-highest skyscraper in Cambodia once completed.

The global architecture archive website aasarchitecture reported that Has-architecture, together with local design R.R Architect, won with its 85-storey tower design proposal in August 2018, though it was only announced on 22 August 2019.

Structured by engineering firm Germany Knippers Helbig, the design of the MGN tower is directed by Liem Nguyen and the competition team including Tran Pham, Khiem Huynh, Tung Vu, Duy Doan, Liem, and Dung Vo.

The design concept of this twisting glass skyscraper came from an inspiration of Ochna flower and Bayon Khmer architecture.

Adding more attraction to the building, the team places commercial and cultural facilities metres away from the street, so citizens will be able to enjoy the atmosphere of a high-rise and in an activated urban environment, like in New York, Singapore or Saigon.

Currently, the 39-storey Vattanac Capital remains the tallest building in Phnom Penh standing at 187.3 metres before the 561.7-metre Thai Boon Roong Twin Tower World Trade Center Complex becomes the tallest building in Cambodia once construction is completed.
