Historical Gateway Transformed: Phnom Penh’s Former Airport to Open as Public Park for Khmer New Year

The iconic site of the former Phnom Penh International Airport, widely known as Pochentong, is set to begin a new chapter as a trial public park, offering residents a unique space for recreation and cultural reflection. According to an announcement from the inter-ministerial committee tasked with managing the kingdom’s former aviation hubs on April 6, 2026, the site will be open to the public for a nine-day trial period coinciding with the upcoming Khmer New Year festivities.

The committee confirmed that admission during this period will be entirely free of charge, inviting citizens to explore the expansive grounds that once served as the nation’s primary international gateway. This initiative aims to provide a grand venue for national celebrations while encouraging public health and community engagement through activities such as sightseeing, exercise, and various sports in a vast, open-air environment.

Beyond its recreational potential, the trial opening serves as a tribute to Cambodia’s architectural heritage. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the historical terminal and surrounding structures up close, gaining a clear perspective on the distinct design and historical value of the Pochentong facility. The government’s decision to open the site highlights a commitment to repurposing historical infrastructure for the social and cultural benefit of the urban community.

During the nine-day window, members of the public will be permitted to access and tour various designated areas and buildings throughout the site. This move is expected to attract significant interest from families and holiday-goers alike, marking a festive and inclusive debut for what is envisioned to become a major new public landmark for the capital.
