Japan Explores Feasibility of Opening Private Hospital in Phnom Penh to Bolster Cambodia’s Healthcare Sector

Japanese delegation expresses strong commitment to expanding medical cooperation and investment through high-standard clinical facilities

The healthcare landscape in Phnom Penh is set for a potential upgrade as a Japanese delegation expresses a firm commitment to exploring the feasibility of establishing a new private hospital in the capital. This initiative, aimed at broadening medical cooperation and increasing Japanese investment in the Kingdom, was the primary focus of a high-level discussion held on March 24, 2026. The meeting brought together His Excellency Koy Vanny, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health, and Mr. IWAKI Mitsuhide, the former Japanese Minister of Justice and current President of the Cambodia-Fukushima Friendship Association.

During the exchange, both parties deliberated on several key pillars for advancing the health sector, including the development of specialized health services, human resource training, and the sharing of advanced medical expertise. A central theme of the dialogue was the continuous improvement of treatment quality, ensuring that healthcare delivery in Cambodia meets international benchmarks. The Japanese delegation’s interest underscores a growing trend of international medical providers looking to contribute to the modernization of Cambodia’s public and private health systems.

His Excellency Koy Vanny officially welcomed the prospect of this private hospital investment, noting that such a project would play a transformative role in the nation’s health infrastructure. He emphasized that the presence of high-standard Japanese medical facilities would offer a wider range of high-quality healthcare options not only for Cambodian citizens but also for the growing community of expatriates living and working in the country. This collaboration is viewed as a vital step toward creating a more robust and diverse healthcare environment that can meet the increasing demand for sophisticated medical services in the region.
