Kambol District Celebrates the Launch of USD 1.4 Million Boeung Thom Water Treatment Plant

In a transformative move to improve access to clean water for Phnom Penh residents, the Cambodian government has inaugurated the Boeung Thom Water Treatment Plant, a USD 1.4 million investment to serve over 3,000 families in the Kambol District.

The inauguration ceremony, held on 16 December 2024, was officiated by HE Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation.

The state-of-the-art plant boasts a production capacity of 6,000 cubic meters of clean water per day, ensuring reliable access to safe drinking water for families in Boeung Thom Sangkat, Prat Lang Sangkat, Sangkhai Phleang Chet Rat, and Sangkat Pong Teuk Sangkat. This development marks a significant stride in Phnom Penh’s efforts to enhance its water supply infrastructure and meet the growing needs of its residents.

HE Long Naro, the Royal Government Delegate managing the Phnom Penh Autonomous Water Supply Authority, highlighted that the plant includes an extensive 91-kilometre water distribution network, sourcing raw water from the Prek Thnaot River. The project was funded through a generous grant of over USD 1.49 million from the Japanese government, complemented by Phnom Penh Autonomous Water Supply Authority contributions.

This milestone aligns with a larger initiative to expand water access in Phnom Penh and Takhmao. By the end of 2024, the Phnom Penh Autonomous Water Supply Authority aims to produce over 980,000 cubic meters of clean water daily and extend its total distribution network to an impressive 4,870 kilometers.

The Boeung Thom Water Treatment Plant is a key component of Cambodia’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030. This development enhances local infrastructure and sets a benchmark for sustainable progress in urban and peri-urban areas.
