Monument aux Morts Statue to be Rebuilt in Phnom Penh

The Monument aux Morts, a symbol of the solidarity between Cambodia and France which was demolished in the 1970s, will be rebuilt in front of the French Embassy near the Chroy Changvar roundabout. 

The plan to rebuild the statue was announced by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on 13  December, Cambodia’s news state agency AKP reported. 

Samdech Techo stated that the statue was found three days before Samdech Techo’s trip to France. 

“I have already agreed with the Minister of Lands, Urban Planning, and construction that we will rebuild this statue, which is a symbol of solidarity between France and Cambodia. It will be located in front of the French Embassy,” he said. 

The statue was built in 1925 and was destroyed by the Khmer Rouge in 1977. Today, some parts are in the National Museum of Phnom Penh.
