Sihanoukville Port’s Deep-Water Expansion Hits Major Milestone as Phase One Reaches 65% Completion

The development of Cambodia’s premier maritime gateway has reached a significant turning point, with construction of the first phase of the new deep-water container terminal at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port now nearly 65% complete. This progress update was a central focus of a high-level monthly review meeting held on March 31, 2026, where officials evaluated the ongoing implementation and safety standards of the massive infrastructure undertaking.

Presided over by His Excellency Lou Kim Chhun, Delegate of the Royal Government of Cambodia and Director General of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, the session brought together technical leaders and project partners to ensure the development remains aligned with the nation’s aggressive economic roadmap. The first phase of the terminal is being executed through a collaboration between the renowned TOA Corporation and a consulting joint venture consisting of Nippon Koei and Oriental Consultant Global.

Once operational, the new facility will fundamentally alter the logistics landscape of Southeast Asia. Featuring a quay length of three hundred and fifty meters and a water depth of fourteen and a half meters, the terminal will empower the port to accommodate approximately ninety-three percent of the large vessels traversing the Asia-Pacific region. This leap in capacity is expected to drive down ocean freight costs by roughly two hundred dollars per container, providing a substantial competitive edge to Cambodian exports on the global stage.

The project is a cornerstone of a broader three-phase master plan supported by the Japanese government through concessional loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. By the time the final phases reach completion, the port’s depth will extend to over seventeen meters, allowing for direct shipments from Europe and the Americas without the need for regional transshipment. This strategic evolution from a local feeder port to a world-class international hub is a vital component of the Kingdom’s 2050 economic vision, aimed at fostering sustainable industrial modernization and logistical independence.

As the construction continues to move forward at a steady pace, the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port remains committed to maintaining the highest safety and quality standards. The successful realization of this first phase is anticipated to increase the port’s total annual handling capacity to nearly one and a half million standard containers, marking a new era of prosperity and connectivity for the Cambodian people.
