Siem Reap’s New $115 Million Water Treatment Plant Nears Completion

Siem Reap is set to open a new US$ 115 million water treatment plant in May 2023, which has reached 99% completion, according to the Siem Reap Water Supply Authority on 27 March 2023. The new water treatment plant is located in Sangkat Chreav and covers an area of 4 hectares with a capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day.

Mr. Seak Pengkeang, Deputy Director General of Siem Reap Water Supply Authority, said that the new water treatment plant will pump water from the Tonle Sap Lake to produce clean water for use. The factory is expected to produce nearly 60,000 cubic meters of clean water per day. The PPWSA has installed a 247-kilometre leading and distribution networks up to this point.

Siem Reap currently has three water treatment plants, two of which can produce more than 25,000 cubic meters of water per day. If mixed with the new plant in Sangkat Chreav, Siem Reap will be able to distribute and produce nearly 100,000 cubic meters of water per day, which will meet the needs of Siem Reap until 2030.

The construction of this new water treatment plant started in 2020, with a total budget of about $115 million under a loan from JICA. The new plant will increase the water supply capacity of Siem Reap and improve the quality of water available to residents.

Siem Reap is a city heavily reliant on tourism, and access to clean water is essential to maintaining its appeal to visitors. The completion of this new water treatment plant will provide a reliable and clean source of water for residents and tourists alike.
