In a resounding commitment to safeguarding the nation’s cultural and ecological treasures, the Government of Cambodia has unveiled a visionary plan to establish 13 natural heritage sites spanning an expansive area of 46,949.42 hectares. These pristine sites have been meticulously chosen to serve as sanctuaries for both cultural heritage and natural diversity.

The creation of these natural heritage sites carries a dual purpose: to curtail unwarranted exploitation of biodiversity, cultural resources, and natural assets, while simultaneously fostering community engagement. By encouraging local participation and public involvement, the government seeks to empower citizens to become stewards of these precious domains, ensuring their sustainable management, protection, and conservation.

Among the 13 newly designated natural heritage sites are notable gems that encapsulate Cambodia’s rich natural tapestry:

1. Kiriyong Natural Heritage Area: Encompassing 984.31 hectares within Treng and Reaksmey Sangha communes in Battambang province, this site is poised to become a bastion of environmental and cultural preservation.
2. Phnom Yeay Sam Natural Heritage Area: Spreading across 416 hectares in Banteay Meanchey province’s Toul Pong commune, this site holds promises of fostering both local pride and biodiversity conservation.
3. Phnom Teak Traing Natural Heritage Area: Encompassing 79.82 hectares in Rattanak Mondul district’s Treng commune, this site promises to preserve the delicate ecological balance of the region.
4. Phnom Chhnang Natural Heritage Area: Extending over 19 hectares in Banteay Meanchey province’s Serey Sophorn city, this site is a testament to the commitment to harmonious coexistence with nature.
5. Phnom Prampi Natural Heritage Area: Covering 353.9 hectares in Battambang province’s Phnom Preuk district, this site symbolizes the harmony between human activities and ecological conservation.
6. Phnom Yat Natural Heritage Area: With an impressive coverage of 31,951 hectares in Pailin City’s Sangkat Pailin, this site stands as a beacon of Cambodia’s dedication to preserving its natural heritage.
7. Phnom Bak Heritage Area: Encompassing 36 hectares in Banteay Meanchey province’s Serey Sophorn city, this site is a reminder of the country’s commitment to sustainable urban planning.
8. Phnom Svay Natural Heritage Area: Spanning 16 hectares in Banteay Meanchey province’s Serey Sophorn city, this site serves as an oasis of green amidst urban landscapes.
9. Phnom Totong-Phnom Touch Natural Heritage Area: Covering 83.44 hectares in Kampot province’s Dang Tong and Banteay Meas districts, this site is a testament to the harmonious coexistence between natural beauty and human activities.
10. Phnom Preah Cave Natural Heritage Area: Extending over 25 hectares in Kampot province’s Banteay Meas district, this site represents the delicate equilibrium between nature and cultural significance.
11. Phnom Preah Net Preah Natural Heritage Area: Encompassing 13 hectares in Banteay Meanchey province’s Preah Net Preah district, this site is a sanctuary of cultural and ecological treasures.
12. Renovation of Phnom Preah-Preah Veng Natural Heritage Area: Covering 1,492 hectares across Banteay Meanchey and Oddar Meanchey provinces, this site represents the continuous efforts to enhance conservation.
13. Renovation of Phnom Tbeng Natural Heritage Area: Encompassing an impressive 43,391 hectares in Preah Vihear province, this site is a testament to the enduring commitment to preserving nature’s wonders.

These sites, carefully selected for their ecological significance and cultural importance, are set to be managed collaboratively by the Ministry of Environment, relevant ministries, institutions, and local authorities. This synergy ensures a harmonious balance between environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable utilization of natural resources.
