Gov’t Expands Two Large Wildlife Sanctuaries to Protect Wildlife & Natural Resources

The Cambodian Government has taken resolute action to rejuvenate and enhance the conservation efforts of two crucial wildlife sanctuaries. The expansion of Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary and Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary, as sanctioned by Sub-Decree No. 181 ANKR.BK and No. 194 ANKR.BK on 17 July 2023, underscores the nation’s commitment to protecting its wildlife and invaluable natural resources.

Under these pivotal decrees, the boundaries of Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary have been expanded from 253,750 hectares to 258,172 hectares, encompassing Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang, and Pursat provinces. Meanwhile, Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary’s expanse has been widened from 431,683 hectares to 489,663 hectares, spanning Kratie, Kampong Thom, Stung Treng, and Preah Vihear provinces.

The strategic goal of these expansions is to fortify the preservation of wildlife habitats and ecosystems, fostering a harmonious environmental balance that contributes to the reduction of climate change and natural disaster risks. The amplified protected areas will serve as strongholds for a diverse array of flora and fauna, exemplifying the nation’s unwavering dedication to sustainable living and environmental harmony.

The stewardship of these rejuvenated wildlife sanctuaries will be overseen by the Ministry of Environment in conjunction with pertinent ministries and institutions. Their joint efforts aim to ensure meticulous environmental management, the conservation of biodiversity, judicious utilization of natural resources, and the upholding of sustainable living practices.

The expansion of Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary and Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary stands as a testament to Cambodia’s enduring commitment to ecological preservation, offering a brighter future for its rich biodiversity and contributing to a global legacy of environmental stewardship.
