Toyota Launches Advanced Hilux Travo Assembly Line in Cambodia

Presided over by high-level Cambodian and Japanese officials, the manufacturing expansion drives local sourcing to 20% and signals surging global corporate confidence in the Kingdom’s industrial ecosystem.

Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art production line for its globally recognized next-generation vehicle, the Toyota Hilux Travo, marking a pivotal expansion in Cambodia’s rapidly evolving automotive sector. The milestone launch represents a deeper phase of corporate investment within the country, actively transitioning local operations from vehicle distribution into sophisticated domestic heavy manufacturing.

The high-profile inauguration ceremony took place on July 2, 2026, drawing key industrial stakeholders, automotive experts, and foreign dignitaries. The landmark event was presided over by HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC); HE Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia; and HE Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation. Their collective presence underscored the strategic importance of the development in reinforcing bilateral economic ties and advancing Cambodia’s long-term industrial master plans.

Reflecting on the company’s extensive history in the region, Harada Shigeru, Toyota’s Business Executive, highlighted that the brand has achieved steady, reliable growth since first setting up commercial operations in Cambodia in 1993. Over more than three decades, Toyota transitioned seamlessly from basic vehicle sales to full-scale maintenance and repair services, eventually advancing into localized automotive assembly. This steady trajectory demonstrates a long-term commitment built on deeply rooted consumer trust and expanding institutional capability within the domestic workforce.

Minister of Industry Hem Vanndy lauded the development during the ceremony, stating that the milestone reflects much more than just the rollout of a new vehicle model. Instead, it serves as a powerful testament to Toyota’s enduring confidence in Cambodia’s political stability, investor-friendly climate, and long-term industrial policy framework. By embedding advanced production lines within the country, global manufacturers are directly validating the government’s economic diversification and tech-transfer strategies.

Since opening its specialized manufacturing facility in 2024, Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) has successfully produced a cumulative total of 6,250 vehicles across its staple Toyota Fortuner SUV and standard Toyota Hilux pickup truck lines. Over this relatively short period, the factory scaled its monthly output capacity more than tenfold—skyrocketing from a baseline of just 40 units per month in 2024 to approximately 400 units per month by the end of 2025. The introduction of the Hilux Travo production line is poised to capitalize on this aggressive operational momentum to meet growing market demands.

A standout achievement praised by both ministerial officials and industry experts is Toyota’s systematic integration of locally manufactured parts, which now comprise roughly 20 percent of the vehicle’s total component mix. This localized procurement strategy is seen as a major catalyst for the country’s broader industrial development, creating extensive domestic value, fostering technical skill transfers, and laying the groundwork for a robust network of supporting localized suppliers.
