Cambodia and China Team Up to Boost Smart Tourism

In a significant step towards enhancing bilateral cooperation, Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism and HEILONGJIANG PROVINCE MAIKU INFORMATION, a Chinese technology firm, have announced a partnership aimed at advancing digitalization in the tourism sector through smart tourism initiatives.

The official commitment was solidified during a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony held on June 29, 2025, which was attended by H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism, and Mr. LI Tao, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HEILONGJIANG PROVINCE MAIKU INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD.

This agreement sets the stage for the development of a comprehensive digital ecosystem designed to enhance tourism management in Cambodia. Key components of the cooperation include the establishment of the Smart Tourism Cambodia Ecosystem, the creation of Tourism Satellite Accounts, a Tourism Data Platform, and a Smart Tourism Dashboard for real-time monitoring of tourism activities. Additionally, the partnership emphasizes the enhancement of human resources within the Ministry of Tourism to support these initiatives.

The move comes at a time when Cambodia is witnessing a surge in tourism revenue; in the first half of 2025, the country generated over USD 27 million from ticket sales at the iconic Angkor sites. This boost aligns with the arrival of over 3.4 million passengers at Cambodia’s three international airports, highlighting the nation’s rising status as a key player in the global tourism market.
