Japan’s Tohoku University Research on Cambodia’s Logistics Systems and Economic Corridor Development

MPWT Undersecretary Vasim Sorya meets Japanese delegation led by Professor Yukiharu KOBAYASHI to review JICA-backed logistics initiatives and cross-border transport strategies

Phnom Penh: Modernizing national logistics networks and optimizing key economic corridors remain fundamental drivers for lowering transport costs and strengthening Cambodia’s regional competitiveness. On September 30, 2026, at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT), Undersecretary of State Vasim Sorya hosted a delegation of researchers and postgraduate students from Japan’s Tohoku University, led by Professor Yukiharu KOBAYASHI, former JICA Senior Representative to Cambodia. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the General Department of Administration and Finance, the General Department of Logistics, as well as SF-CLIP3 project advisors and JICA experts.

The academic exchange aimed to share operational insights regarding the JICA-supported “Project for Improving the Logistics System of Cambodia” (SF-CLIP/CLIP3). Discussions also covered updates on national logistics policies, current sector priorities, and an evaluation of Japan’s development contributions in comparison to other international development partners.

Key topics included the development of the Southern Economic Corridor through strategic infrastructure projects funded and supported by Japan, such as National Road No. 1, National Road No. 5, the Tsubasa Bridge in Neak Loeung, and Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Furthermore, the delegations addressed border congestion along major trade gateways including Bavet and Poipet, discussing strategic interventions such as parking facility development, logistics hubs, AI-powered traffic monitoring cameras, and streamlined customs procedures, including trial operations at the Stung Bot-Ban Nong Ian international border checkpoint.

In conclusion, the engagement between MPWT and Tohoku University highlights the ongoing technical partnership between Cambodia and Japan in transforming transport routes into fully functional economic corridors. By integrating digital monitoring technologies, simplifying border procedures, and expanding regional trade cooperation, Cambodia continues to build a resilient logistics foundation capable of reducing shipping costs and attracting long-term foreign investment.
