New Zealand Pledges $12.7 Million Grant for Water Supply in Angkor, Uplifting Lives and Preserving Heritage

In a remarkable display of international partnership, New Zealand has extended a generous grant of US$12.7 million to the APSARA Authority, solidifying their commitment to supporting a comprehensive water management project within the revered Angkor resort area.

The momentous Memorandum of Understanding on the Partnership for an Efficient and Sustainable Water Management Project in Angkor for Climate Change and Socio-Economic Resilience was signed on 9th June 2023, marking a pivotal milestone in preserving Cambodia’s cultural heritage and improving the well-being of local communities.

His Excellency Jonathan KINGS, Ambassador of New Zealand to Cambodia, emphasized the paramount importance of this grant, stating, “The allocation of approximately US$12.7 million for the implementation of a water management project in the Angkor resort area underscores our commitment to bolstering the irrigation system’s efficiency and enhancing the livelihoods of communities residing in this historically significant region.”

HE Dr Hang Pov, Director General of the APSARA Authority, further highlighted the extensive benefits of the water management project, not only for the majestic temples of Angkor but also for the surrounding communities. This transformative initiative plays a pivotal role in supporting agricultural cultivation, safeguarding against the perils of floods and droughts, and fostering sustainable socio-economic development.

This marks the fourth collaboration between New Zealand and the APSARA Authority, signifying their enduring dedication to the preservation and enhancement of the Angkor heritage site.

Previous projects, including the Angkor Management Plan (Angkor Management Plan), the natural resource management program through the Angkor Participatory Natural Resource Management & Livelihoods (APNRM & L), and the Angkor Community Heritage and Economic Advancement (ACHA), have laid the foundation for this groundbreaking water management endeavor.

This significant financial contribution from New Zealand stands as a testament to the global recognition of Angkor’s cultural and historical significance. It affirms a shared commitment to preserving Cambodia’s rich heritage while uplifting the lives of local communities. Through effective water management, the grant will safeguard the sustainability of the Angkor resort area, ensuring its continued splendor for generations to come.
