Bassac Riverbank Stabilization Project in Kandal Reaches 60% Completion

The ongoing infrastructure initiative to reinforce the Bassac riverbank in Sampov Poun City, Kandal Province, has achieved a significant milestone, with construction teams completing approximately 60% of the designated works. Local authorities and engineering crews remain heavily committed to accelerating the remaining phases to ensure the project concludes entirely on schedule.

During a recent field inspection to evaluate the site’s development, HE Thor Chetha, the Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, confirmed that the protection project spans a total length of 500 meters along the Bassac-Houve riverbank, specifically located within Prek Chrey quarter of Sampov Poun City. The minister noted that the technical teams have made steady headway across multiple essential phases of construction.

The complex engineering operations completed so far include foundational piling works, the strategic placement of sandbags utilizing specialized geotextile sheets for lower-tier stabilization, and the arrangement of protective stone gabions. Additionally, crews have poured concrete beams to secure the foundation, prepared the structural soil for slope paving, constructed a concrete service road, installed safety railings, and executed extensive concrete slope pouring. With these core tasks largely finalized, the project is on track for full completion in the near future.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology officially launched this 500-meter reinforcement project on May 25, 2025. The development serves as an extension of an existing 1,200-meter riverbank shield previously completed in the Prek Chrey area. Once fully operational, the expanded infrastructure will provide a vital barrier against severe riverbank erosion, safeguarding the properties, livelihoods, and lives of hundreds of families residing along the waterfront. While physical progress continues at a rapid pace, the exact budget scale and primary funding sources for this initiative have not yet been publicly disclosed. (read more)
