Cambodia’s Electric Vehicle Registrations Surge 136% in First Half of 2026

Cambodia’s transition toward clean and sustainable mobility is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, marked by a dramatic increase in electric vehicle adoption nationwide during the first half of 2026. During a high-level public-private sector dialogue on July 22, 2026, official figures presented by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport revealed that total nationwide electric vehicle registrations reached 20,600 units by the end of June 2026. Presided over by Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, the meeting brought together key government officials, transport associations, electric vehicle suppliers, and private operators to review progress and coordinate future development strategies.

The sharp upward trajectory in adoption is underscored by the registration of 7,632 new electric vehicles within the first six months of 2026 alone. This surge represents an extraordinary growth rate of approximately 136% compared to the same period in 2025, demonstrating growing consumer confidence and strong market demand for eco-friendly transit options across the country. According to official records from the ministry, the cumulative breakdown of registered electric vehicles as of June 2026 includes 15,239 electric cars, 862 electric three-wheelers, and 4,499 electric motorcycles.

This rapid expansion reflects the strategic vision set forth under the National Policy on the Development of Electric Vehicles 2024-2030, which aims to establish a comprehensive green transport ecosystem across the Kingdom. The ministry organized the dialogue specifically to bridge government policy with private sector execution, creating an open forum to exchange technical insights, identify practical operational needs, address infrastructure challenges, and evaluate inter-ministerial support mechanisms. By actively engaging with suppliers and operators, the Royal Government seeks to build momentum, expand charging infrastructure, and overcome market barriers.
