Strong Growth for Phnom Penh Autonomous Port as Container Throughput Surges 34% in First Quarter

Phnom Penh — The Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP) has reported a remarkably strong performance for the first quarter of 2026, underscored by a double-digit surge in container traffic and overall cargo volume. The listed port operator’s latest figures signal a buoyant start to the year, reflecting Cambodia’s expanding import-export activities and the growing efficiency of its waterway logistics network.

Robust trade activity and increasing domestic production drive significant gains in waterway logistics and revenue for the state-owned river port

According to an unaudited business report released on April 20, 2026, the port handled a total of 162,242 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) during the first three months of the year. This represents a substantial increase of 33.61% compared to the same period in 2025. The rise in container throughput is a key indicator of the Kingdom’s economic momentum and the increasing preference for river-based transport solutions.

The growth extended across all operational categories. Total cargo and fuel throughput at the facility reached 1,468,638 tonnes, marking a 13.35% improvement year-on-year. Additionally, the port welcomed 1,001 cargo vessels during the quarter, an 11.59% increase in docking frequency. Beyond cargo, passenger traffic also saw a steady climb, with 153 passenger boats carrying 15,886 travelers, representing growth rates of 8.52% and 2.33% respectively.

This operational success translated into a financial windfall for the CSX-listed company, which generated approximately 13.9 million US dollars in total revenue for the quarter, an increase of more than a third compared to 2025. Industry experts attribute this success to the port’s strategic focus on transparency, efficiency, and infrastructure development, including expanded storage capacity and modernized machinery.

Looking ahead, the outlook for the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port remains highly positive. The upcoming Funan Techo Canal project is expected to further catalyze this growth by providing a more direct link between river transport and deep-sea ports, potentially reducing costs and travel times for Cambodian manufacturers. As the port continues to modernize its standards, it is well-positioned to remain a cornerstone of Cambodia’s logistical infrastructure and a primary gateway for the nation’s trade with the world.
